Description

This book chronicles Bob Hamblin’s 2 month birding trip to Alaska in 2007.

Follow along as Bob visits Anchorage, Fairbanks, St. Paul Island, Nome, Prudhoe Bay and many other destinations.

Along the way he photographs Mew Gull, Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch, Kittlitz’s Murrelet, Aleutian Tern, Red-legged Kittiwake, Arctic Warbler, Horned and Tufted Puffin and other hard to find species.

In addition to maps and photos this book includes 21 bird videos that highlight Bob’s videography skills, which include narratives of habitat and birding ID points.

Bob’s insights as a naturalist include more than birds. Alaska’s history and culture, it’s weather and its forests are all described with the details only a seasoned traveler can impart.

It’s not all fun and games. The weather doesn’t cooperate and nesting birds are late to arrive. There’s equipment breakdowns, unexpected expenses and encounters with bears and moose and natives who don’t have time for bird photographers.

Through it all Bob keeps his focus on photographing the birds that will push his lifetime count to over 600 species photographed.
